Stop time so I can catch up!


Do you often feel that time is running faster than your breath? Do you feel the frenetic rhythms of daily life to suffocate you? It’s time to put a semicolon and calm down a little.

When I was a kid I remember that the time seemed to pass slower and the day lasted much longer, or so it is in my mind and memory. Τoday there are more than a few times that I feel I don’t have time. A day passes really quickly. A week goes fast. And week after week, year after year I became 30 years old and I didn’t even realized it. For this abyssal speed of our life the cause is the day, which is usually filled by work commitments that suck all of our energy and leave us in the end of the day just feeling exhausted and seeking rest.

To show you how fast time goes by and how things are happening in a day with such speed that they are barely registered in our memory, I will give you one small exercise. I suggest you to do it in the night somewhere warm and comfortable just before you go to bed. It can be in bed, on the couch, in a chair, on the floor – as long as the place is quiet and comfortable. Close your eyes, take a few conscious and calm breaths. Feel your whole body and then direct your mind to an experience you had during the day. Relive a moment of your day through your mind, for example when you were going to a business meeting. Try to see the images of the city, the colors, the details on the expressions of the people you met, words that you said and they are coming back naturally to your mind.

You’d be surprised how many details you will remember, how many things you hadn’t noticed you now will, but also how many things you can not even see an image of because they passed too fast in front of you. With the repetition in your mind you will «relive» scenes of the day free from the tension and the fast rhythm since you you will control the speed. You will see that with this exercise you will relax, you will discover the natural speed that time has to you and you will also improve the capacity of your memory.

Do not be afraid to relax and if you fall asleep that’s even better. When I want to relax, to train my mind and to find my natural time I do the same exercise with a a slight change. I read a chapter of a book and then I close my eyes and I picture the pages that I read, like scenes from a movie in my head.
